„Friedrich List“ Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden

We are interested in being featured as a highlighted member in an upcoming newsletter of the GTRA – The German-Thai Railway Association:

(1) A brief introduction (who you are, core competencies, history, etc.)

The “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden is the only faculty in Germany dedicated to transport and traffic sciences, and has an internationally recognized competence for sustainable mobility. The interdisciplinary research covers the entire range of transport on land (roads and tracks) and in the air.

The faculty is a pioneer in the development of systemic solutions for the design of safe, efficient and sustainable transport systems according to technical, economic, ecological and social criteria.

Research and teaching are integrated within TU Dresden and the larger DRESDEN-concept network as well as with national and international partners from science and industry.

Well over 200 scientists research and teach at 7 institutes and 22 professorships, including 6 professors with an explicit focus on railway and railway systems (infrastructure, vvehicles, operations, safety and signalling, propulsion).

The faculty offers 6 stand-alone study programs, including the diploma degree in Transport Engineering (incl. a major on railway systems), the bachelor degree in Transport Economics and 4 master programs, e. g. the Masters program Railway System Engineering.

For practical applications in research and teaching, our researchers and our 1,000 students to around 30 laboratories or experimental and test facilities, including the integrated railway laboratory, the railway energy supply laboratory and a systems laboratory for track-guided vehicles.

The faculty looks back on 70 years of transport research and teaching. A central focus has always been on railway vehicles, railway technology, railway systems and public transport.

(2) How are you related to GTRA? Any contributions or involvements you would like to share?

The Faculty of Engineering at Mahidol University/Thailand and the “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden/Germany have signed a cooperation agreement for closer collaboration in research and teaching in 2021.

Within the German-Thai railway cooperation signed between Germany and Thailand in 2020, the Faculty of Engineering at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, co-hosted a workshop in December 2021 together with the German-Thai Railway Association (GTRA) on the topic “High Speed Rail: The Changing Face of Thai Railways”. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Arnd Stephan, Head of the Chair of Electric Railways at the “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden, gave a keynote speech. The participants from Thailand were very interested in Arnd Stephan’s expertise on the development and expansion of a high-speed rail network.

Labs

Our Railway Operations Laboratory of the Faculty of Transport Sciences “Friedrich List” – one of the most modern railway laboratories in Europe!

The railway operations laboratory combines teaching and research. It is a modern university railway test facility that enables practical exercises and demonstrations. The students operate on a combination of a real model railway system with original signal boxes, a PC-supported simulated railway network and an operations and interlocking simulation (BEST). Courses are held in the laboratory, with the professorship as well as with other partners. These are integrated courses on operational management and safety technology in railway traffic.
